The Man Who Turned Old Clothes Into Dignity

A former journalist who saw that the clothes we throw away could become a currency of dignity for rural India.

Anshu Gupta was working as a journalist when a chance encounter changed the direction of his life. He met a man in Delhi whose job was to carry unclaimed dead bodies, people who had died on the streets, often of the cold. The man's young daughter, he learned, played with those bodies to stay warm. The story lodged in Anshu's heart: in a country with so much surplus, people were dying for the want of a piece of cloth.

In 1999 he left his corporate job and founded Goonj, built on a deceptively simple insight, that clothing is a basic but almost entirely ignored need, and that the cities throw away exactly what the villages lack. Rather than treat old clothes as charity handouts, Goonj reimagined them as a resource, and dignity as the point.

His flagship idea, 'Cloth for Work,' flipped charity on its head. Instead of giving material away for free, Goonj invites rural communities to identify and solve their own problems, building bamboo bridges, digging wells, cleaning ponds, repairing roads, and rewards that effort with kits of clothing and household goods. The villagers are not beneficiaries but partners; the reward is earned, and the dignity stays intact.

Goonj also confronted a subject few would touch. Through its 'Not Just a Piece of Cloth' initiative, it turned waste cloth into affordable, clean menstrual pads and opened up honest conversations about menstrual health in villages across India. And when floods and earthquakes strike, Goonj becomes one of the country's most trusted relief networks.

In 2015, Anshu Gupta was honoured with the Ramon Magsaysay Award, often called the Nobel Prize of Asia, for his creative vision in transforming the culture of giving in India. His life's work is a quiet argument that the answer to scarcity is often already in our cupboards, waiting to be shared with respect.
