The Surgeon Who Made Cancer Care Free

A celebrated oncologist who left a prestigious career to bring free, compassionate cancer treatment to one of India's most underserved regions.

Dr. Ravi Kannan was an accomplished surgical oncologist and head of surgical oncology at the renowned Adyar Cancer Institute in Chennai, a position of prestige and comfort. But in 2007, he chose to leave it behind, moving with his family to Silchar in Assam's Barak Valley to lead the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, a small non-profit hospital serving a remote and impoverished region.

Under his leadership as director, the hospital was transformed. Dr. Kannan and his team set out to dismantle the twin myths that cancer is always incurable and always ruinously expensive. They built systems to make treatment affordable and, in many cases, free, so that no patient would be turned away or bankrupted by the cost of care.

Beyond treatment, he focused on the whole human being. Recognising that families in the region often lost their income when illness struck, the hospital pioneered deeply humane measures to help patients and their families cope with the practical and financial burden of cancer, and worked to bring care closer to those who could not easily travel.

His quiet, service-driven work has earned national and international recognition, including the Padma Shri in 2020 and the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2023. He continues to serve the people of Barak Valley with the same humility that first brought him there.
