The Madhya Pradesh Voluntary Health Association was established on 14 April 1973 at Padhar Hospital in Betul, founded by Rev. Fr. James S. Tong under the chairmanship of Dr D.W. Mategoankar, before relocating its headquarters to Indore. As the state chapter of the Voluntary Health Association of India, it has grown into the largest network of voluntary health organisations in Madhya Pradesh, counting nearly 300 member organisations by its 25th anniversary in 1998. Its programme areas span maternal and child nutrition, tobacco control, eye care in urban slums, an AIDS helpline, reproductive health, and action against gender-based violence and sex-selective practices, alongside emergency response during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. MPVHA reports that Madhya Pradesh's tobacco use fell from 39.5% in 2008-09 to 34.2% in 2016-17 across the districts where it works, and that 27 districts have since been declared smoke-free.
