The Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust was set up in 1945 in memory of Kasturba Gandhi, with Sarojini Naidu leading the effort alongside Mahatma Gandhi, Vallabhbhai Patel and other freedom fighters, to address the neglect of rural women during the independence movement. Headquartered at Kasturbagram on Khandwa Road in Indore, the trust now runs 22 state branches across India. Its Indore campus includes schools from primary through postgraduate level, the Kasturba Rural Institute offering degrees in home science and rural development, healthcare services for remote communities, khadi spinning, tailoring and agricultural skill training, and a gaushala with around 130 livestock. The trust reports that roughly 90% of Kasturba Rural Institute graduates belong to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities.
