ANANDI (Area Networking and Development Initiatives) was set up in Ahmedabad in 1995 to bring rural women's concerns into the centre of Gujarat's development processes, rather than treating women as passive beneficiaries of programs designed elsewhere. Its core method is building and strengthening independent, women-led community-based organisations among tribal, Dalit, de-notified tribe and other marginalised communities, so that women themselves negotiate for land rights, livelihoods, panchayat representation and protection from violence. ANANDI has worked for three decades across districts including Panchmahals, Dahod, Morbi and Bhavnagar, combining grassroots organising with feminist research and policy advocacy. The name 'Anandi' means joyfulness in Gujarati, reflecting the organisation's stated aim of making the struggle for rights a source of collective strength rather than only hardship.
